Mr. Hardik Shah, IAS
Member Secretary
Gujarat Pollution Control Board

Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) is aiming at developing all round organisational capabilities and that of its staff to protect the environment by preventing and controlling pollution by effective law enforcement and adopting best environmental management practices to keep the State of Gujarat on the course of sustainable development.
Towards the effort to improve environmental performance by industries, German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt - UBA), in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under Indo-German Environment Partnership (IGEP) Programme has come forward to extend its support to Gujarat Pollution Control Board. Gujarat is one of the states where there is focus of activities under the cooperation, particularly to showcase pilot examples and initiate capacity building measures for replication and up-scaling of the successful examples related to textiles and pulp & paper sectors. To start the cooperation with UBA, the activities are initiated in Gujarat with the Gujarat Pollution Control Board on identified sectors and the UBA support will eventually be extended to other sectors as may be identified from time to time.
With successful implementation of e-governance and many other innovative tools, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board marched towards the role of a facilitator from that of a regulator. This will support industries, policy makers and regulators in addressing environmental concerns with regard to the relevant industries, thereby improving their environmental performance and consequently limiting pollutant discharges and other impacts on the environment
GPCB initiated the “Knowledge Exchange Platform” which is a web portal to serve the industrial communities/ solutions providers, regulatory authorities and financing institutes (dealing with such technologies) by way of providing access to reference documents, case studies, and guidelines and check list related to the ‘Environmental Friendly Technology’. It is intended to exchange information not only about technology but also on management tools, proper maintenance, planning and sizing of techniques, education of workers that includes safety issues and measures too.
The platform is designed in such a way that it also facilitates the flow of information, which may be sought in the subject area by the user to the provider and vice versa.
