Pulp & Paper Sector

Indian paper industry is the 15th largest in the world. It provides employment to nearly 1.5 million people and contributes Rs 25 billion to the government's kitty. The Indian pulp and paper industry at present is very well developed and established. The paper industry is categorized as forest-based, agro-based and others (waste paper, secondary fibre, bast fibres and market pulp).

In Gujarat, there are over 100 paper industries with a production capacity of 10.50 lakh metric tons in Gujarat.  It employs over 1 lakh people in the State.  In the backdrop of the current faster pace of industrial development and also having the largest coastline, it is expected that in coming years  more new projects on recycled base paper would be set-up in the state.

Whereas the contribution of the Indian paper Industry to the GDP is quite significant, due to its large water and energy consuming processes, it has its own share of negative environmental impacts to the environment.

For ensuring competitiveness of the Indian pulp & paper sector, it is important to address issues of environment, viz. pollution and negative environmental impacts and resource efficiency, viz. material, energy and water consumption. Also, there is need to adopt cleaner and improved production processes.
